Foundational Visual Branding, Brand Strategy

A Fantastical Education

Adam Ross, founder of First Fantasy Books and author of The Explorers Guide series of books, had an idea to combine his professional training and experience in education with his love of fantasy fiction to create the Explorers Guide series of Educational Fantasy books for kids.

Simple and easy to access books that build off of each other creating a solid foundation for reading comprehension and skill (amongst many other benefits), while at the same time introducing creative aspects of reading fiction like reading and pronouncing names we don’t normally hear as well as items that might be foreign to our experience.

It became clear that we needed to communicate a sense of whimsy as well as excellence in creation.

In other words, we wanted to be sure that whoever interacts with these images will get the sense that these books are both fun and accessible while at the same time being held to a high standard of educational outcomes.

This is all based on many years of research and experience in the field by Adam Ross.

Our Approach

This project was all about the books.

To portray the sense of expertise accompanied by whimsy, I decided to build a small set that incorporated these qualities.

I also decided to use elements that remind one of late middle ages and renaissance eras by using visual elements such as a bunch of grapes and worn wooden boxes in the background.

I also used a complicated lighting structure that adds a sense of depth and engagement to the images.

The elegance and light color and texture of the velvet that serves as the base for the other design elements also lends another sense of quality, which adds to the overall feel of value and quality of the books.

The books are also printed on high quality paper that are satisfying to the touch. These elements serve to signal this very real tactile element of the books.

Deliverables Overview
